Cut Purse Rascals play OxJam Exeter Takeover Weekend
Preparing for this gig was so much more than our normal band practice. Kit organisation, transport, and those extension leads that mysteriously seem to vanish at the last minute. We also had the added pressure of not knowing if our drummer would be with us or if he'd be called to the hospital for the birth of his third child (a new little rascal!)...
The first thing we have to talk about is the rain, as there was so much of it! But the Oxjam bands carried on playing regardless as did the shoppers who braved the downpours to listen and donate to such a great cause. At one point the winds looked so strong I'm sure I saw an old lady swept off her feet by her brolly and was last seen heading over Lloyds Bank.
Some bright spark also managed to put the Oxjam marquee over the main drain in the square, so we were desperately trying to salvage amps and guitars at one point as the marquee was overrun by the deluge. But enough about the weather what about the music?
Having been given an hour to play we decided to start things off with a couple of trusted covers. Blue Eyes by Middlebrother and King Harvest will Surely Come by The Band. Both terriffic songs that really let us hit the ground running. We then had the pleasure of playing The Wrestler... our own track about Devon wrestler Abraham Cann. As we moved through the set people came and went as is the norm for these bad weather events, but we were pleased to see a constant stream of children dropping money in the dontation buckets. We finished off our set with Heavitree. We have just finished recording Heavitree for our new EP. You can stream it here www.soundcloud.com/cutpurserascals
Thanks to Oxjam for organising such a great event and I hope we can be a part of it again in the future.
