Cygnet’s summer is packed with delights from Shakespearean Romance in The Winter’s Tale to the shocking reality of Terrorism a contemporary play by Russian Presnyakov Brothers.  Between these many visiting companies join us at Cygnet Theatre; eight of whom will be with us for our second Festival at Cygnet week 6th-11th June - join us to find out more at our Press Launch night on 10th May from 6-8pm.

TICTAC Theatre kick off the performance season on May 11th & 12th with a double bill of relationship comedies:  Steven Bloomer’s fast-paced and witty You Were After Poetry, and The Bride to Be by Peter Quilter featuring Angela who is embarking on her third marriage amidst a barrage of bad omens and a dress resembling a parachute.  Regular audiences will remember TICTAC’s successful tour of Dario Fo’s The Open Couple last summer.

On 13th May, in A Random Melody, Wren Music raid Devon’s folk song collections in a programme inspired by the photographs of James Ravilious.  A must for all lovers of Devon’s countryside music and heritage!

They are followed on 14th May with a children’s concert from Force Five Wind Quintet – Flautist Jessica Wright; Oboist Ben Edmonds; Clarinettist John Welton, and Beth Osment on Horn with Prue Tasman on Bassoon with Carol Galton at the piano – all accompany the adventures of Lupin the Pot-Bellied Pig as related by Mai Targett.

As May closes Cygnet Theatre’s production of The Winter’s Tale opens – a story encompassing Courtly Drama Passion, Rustic Comedy, Hope and Wisdom – playing between 25th & 28th May, before touring to various venues all over Devon both indoors and outdoors throughout June and July.  Look out on the website for details of a venue near you.

On June 2nd Baroque Theatre Company breeze into Cygnet as part of their extensive national tour, with ‘a delicious deconstruction of farce’ (Eastern Daily Press), Kindly Leave the Stage – directed by Adam Morley.  Regular visitors may remember last year’s highly enjoyable visit with Inspector Morse mystery House of Ghosts.  Don’t miss it!

From 6th-11th June Festival at Cygnet welcomes eight different companies for fourteen different performances in a Fringe-style week – full details are on the Cygnet Website but include all of life from cradle to grave including original work to reinterpretations of Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, Beckett and all the fun of Clowning.  All tickets are £8.  Start times vary.

From 6th – 9th July Cygnet Theatre Company bring a starkly topical modern play which opens with a bomb scare at an airport… in Terrorism Russian brother’s Presnyakov explore the implications for all of us of this new and frightening form of warfare.

Wren Music return on 22nd July to host a special evening celebrating the contribution of Wren’s founders Marilyn Tucker and Paul Wilson to Devon’s folk scene over many years. Peggy Seeger will appear alongside a galaxy of guest artists.

Finally, if this has whetted your appetite to try some acting for yourself, or you would like to explore some of Shakespeare’s characters for yourself– why not consider a five-day course during the first week in August?

As always more details of all these opportunities are available on Cygnet’s website or at Cygnet Theatre.
