29% of people in Exeter ain’t got that loving feeling
29% of people in Exeter who are in a relationship will spend nothing on their other halves this Valentine’s Day, according to new research commissioned by shopping and price comparison website Give as you Live.
Exeter is less romantic than the rest of the country, as a quarter of Brits will spend nothing this Valentine’s Day. In the gender stakes, the ladies across the country are the least romantic this Valentine’s Day with nearly a third (29%) of women in a relationship planning to shun gift buying this year, compared to 23% of men in relationships.
Leaving it late, 13% of gift buyers in Exeter plan to buy their gifts a couple of days before, whilst a further 13% will cut it even finer and buy presents on their way to see their partner.
Exeter is still better than the rest of the country though, with 28% of gift buyers across Britain purchasing gifts in the days before, and one in ten (10%) buying on Valentine’s Day or on the way to see their partner.
The keenest Exeter residents (20%) purchase gifts between a week and a month in advance, compared to 37% of Brits. The average spend for all gift buyers in Exeter is set to be £24 – slightly lower than the country average of £25.
Steff Lewis, Head of Consumer Insights, Give as you Live commented, “It’s interesting to see many of us are leaving Valentine’s Day to the last minute – buying gifts for their loved ones the day before or in some cases, waiting until February 14th.
She continues, “They are missing out on potentially massive savings by leaving their gift buying to the last minute. Furthermore, shoppers can use sites like giveasyoulive.com, where they can get deals from over 3,700 retailer but also raise a free donation for the charity of their choice. It’s a great way to share the love this Valentine’s Day.”
Across the country, more than half of Brits (55%) expect a card as minimum on Valentine’s Day, followed by flowers (11%) and chocolates (10%). However some will settle for much less, with 4% of Brits settling for just a text and 3% content with an email.
Among Exeter residents, expectations were lower, with 63% happy with a card, followed by a cuddly toy or chocolates (both at 13%). While a text message won’t cut it, some were also only expecting an email (6%) as the minimum gift.
These results come from a survey of over 2,000 people across the UK, who were asked about their plans for Valentine’s Day shopping. Give as you Live – who commissioned the survey – is a shopping and price comparison website with a heart.
To date, Give as you Live has helped to raise over £5 million for UK charities. Every registered UK charity can benefit, and more than 3,700 online retailers are taking part, including Tesco, John Lewis, Selfridges, lastminute.com, ASOS.com and many more.
