The National Trust's East Devon ranger team are running their next hedge laying event on Saturday 7 December at Lower Halsdon Farm.

Hedge-laying is a traditional method of maintaining and regenerating hedgerows and is generally carried out on a 12 to 15 year cycle. This helps prolong the life of the hedge, create a stock proof boundary as well as improving wildlife habitat.

The National Trust team believe their hedge laying event benefits more than just the hedges.

Kate Sheard, a Community Ranger, said: "Volunteering is a great way to meet new people and make friends as well as helping to conserve the East Devon countryside.

"It’s a way for people to give something back to the local area and gain new skills. All you need is a pair of wellies and some gloves and we’ll get you started."

As well as being a great way to meet new friends, hedge laying can be a great day out for all the family, with the event involving you bringing nothing but wellies, gloves and a good old fashioned packed lunch.

Families can also enjoy roasting marshmellows by the fire at this Saturday's event.

The session will be split into two; the adult session will run 10am until 3pm and there will be the opportunity for families to get involved at  drop in sessions which run from 10.30am until 2.30pm.

No booking necessary, please meet at the gate at the end of Seafield Avenue. If you are stopping for the day please bring a packed lunch.

The sessions will continue in 2014 on Sunday 19 January, Tuesday 18 February and Sunday 2 March.
