A family law specialist has spoken out about domestic abuse after the recent media storm surrounding The Archers.

Imran Khodabocus of The Family Law Company says that the long-running Rob and Helen storyline in The Archers, which culminated in a violent act, has been a timely reminder that victims of abuse need to know that there is help available to them.

“Too often victims of domestic abuse will put up with their situation until they can’t take anymore,” explained Imran.

“If you are continually being bullied and controlled, and have fears for your children, then a dramatic act like this – whether from fear or anger – could well happen.”

The stabbing of Rob by Helen has divided listeners, many of whom had listened to the continual chipping away at Helen’s confidence over the past two and a half years as she was bullied in a variety of ways.

Often people forget that domestic abuse is not just physical; it can come in many different forms. The NSPCC sums up most of the important points about what form domestic abuse can take. 'Domestic abuse is any type of controlling, bullying, threatening or violent behaviour between people in a relationship. But it isn’t just physical violence – domestic abuse includes emotional, physical, sexual, financial or psychological abuse.'

“In The Archers, Rob’s ongoing abuse took the form of constant put downs, demands on what she should wear, and making her feel hopeless,” explained Imran.

“But no matter what form the abuse takes, there is help available and I would urge people,” he added.

For most victims of domestic abuse, the first step is the hardest, as Helen found out. Here in the South West there are a number of agencies including Splitz, Devon Domestic Abuse Services and SAFE (Stop Abuse For Everyone) who are easily contactable, and can offer emotional and financial support such as help with benefits and housing claims.

“We need to remember that domestic abuse is a crime. Harassment should be reported to the police and if for any reason they can’t step in, then a solicitor like The Family Law Company can help you to seek an injunction to stop the harassment.”

Although legal aid has been cut drastically, it is available for issues involving domestic violence, depending on your financial situation. Even if you don’t qualify, your initial appointment with The Family Law Company is always free.
