Summer events at Lydford Gorge
During the summer holidays, Lydford Gorge has a number of events to tempt children and their families away from their television and computer screens, outside and closer to nature with all the benefits that this brings.
The Lydford Gorge walk is stunning at any time of the year and through the holidays there is also a butterfly trail. This trail is designed to teach people the differences between the butterflies found on Dartmoor, making that learning a fun experience so that everyone can then have a go spotting and naming real butterflies in the wild. There is a prize for all completed trails and a spotter sheet for everyone to take home.
On each Thursday afternoon over the holidays there are several different events for everyone to enjoy. Sessions about beautiful butterflies and bugs, a bat and moth night and, on the last two Thursdays before the holiday ends; our lead ranger will be taking visitors on an entertaining guided walk through the history of Lydford village and gorge.
During the walk, he will tell visitors about fascinating legends such as the ‘White Lady’ and the wild tribe of the ‘Gubbins’.
Fay Langston, Visitor Services Officer at Lyford Gorge, said: “We have pulled together events to appeal to everyone this year, to make the already special visit even better; and we hope everyone will come along and enjoy all we have to offer”.
The ‘50 things to do before you are 11 ¾’ campaign’, with scrapbooks and stickers, is available; and the two tearooms offer sumptuous snacks and drinks and a shop full of National Trust produce.
