As we come into the new year, you may be looking for ways to improve your health and fitness levels. One way you can do this is by eating a more improved and healthy diet. This could mean swapping out sugary snacks for healthier options or cutting back on the fatty foods you eat.

We’ve done some research into the best ways to improve your eating habits and we’ve gathered all of the information below. Check it all out now and get eating more healthily this year!

Shop smarter

There are a few ways that you can adapt your shopping habits to improve the way you eat. To begin with, shopping organically is a great way to ensure that the food you are eating isn’t full of harmful pesticide and fertiliser residue. This residue is leftover in the mainstream farming process meaning the food you eat can contain these harmful synthetic chemicals. This residue has been known to cause adverse effects in humans and so choosing organic means protecting yourself against this.

Additionally, shopping from smaller and local business can mean choosing meat and other produce that tastes better and has more vitamins and minerals in it. Shopping with companies like Dorset Meat Company means enjoying the highest quality cuts of grass-fed meat. Choosing small and local shops also means supporting the local economy and doing your part for the environment.

Eat more grains

It is widely accepted that the best diets are high in wholegrains. This means eating more wholewheat options over the processed version. Swap out your white pasta for a wholewheat option and try buying bread made from brown or wholewheat flours.

You could also try adding more grains like quinoa, barley, and brown rice into your diet as part of meals to replace white rice.

Eat more veg

This one has been drilled into you since you were a kid, but it still stands today. Eating more vegetables means getting more dietary fibre and nutrients into your diet. These nutrients help to support important bodily functions and keep the digestive system running.

Try adding more vegetables into your life and aim for more veg and grains than anything else on your plate and next time you serve porterhouse steak, remember to pair it with lots of healthy vegetables!

Make your food more fun

This could include making your plates more colourful or plating your meals up like you’re in a five-star restaurant. You could also try eating new and interesting food to make your dinner times more interesting.

Why not try a traditional goat meat curry or add some merguez sausages to your spicy, tomato pasta dish? Trying out new things can help you to enjoy eating meals and help you to avoid snacking so often!

Eat alternative meat options

Taking out the beige and topping up the veg isn’t the only thing you can do to upgrade your mealtimes this year.  In fact, why not consider choosing some interesting alternative options when it comes to your meat. Try swapping out traditional meats for a high quality veal cut in place of traditional beef.

Limit sugary foods

This is another tip that we have been told since we were kids. Limiting sugary foods mean protecting our teeth from cavities and helping us to eat a healthier diet. Try swapping out sugary snacks from nuts and seeds and limit the amount of sugar you use to sweeten tea and coffee.

Eat good fats

You’ve probably always been told to limit fatty foods, but this actually means limiting foods with lots of saturated fats. You should try to get some healthy fats into your diet as they’re very good for heart health. Healthy fats include extra-virgin olive oil and avocado!
