Relaxation should be a priority of any home and that should certainly be the case at present, where stress levels are higher than ever before.

There are many ways in which you can evoke a sense of calm and relaxation in a home. In fact, it can vary from room to room, and scents play a huge part in that.

Looking after our mental health is becoming more and more important, especially at a time when more people are turning to drink and drugs to combat their worries. But rather than becoming hooked and needing a drug detox, by managing your mental health regularly through health coping mechanisms, you can make sure you can stay healthy and happy.

So, light a candle, kick back and escape in the comfort of your own home!

Sounds good doesn’t it? The only question is, what scent should you use?

Lavender

Perhaps the most popular scent for relaxation, lavender is renowned for its calming and sedative properties and you’ll find tons of lavender scented candles and diffusers on the market.

The aroma of the heathland plant has been used for centuries to promote relaxation, relieve anxiety and improve sleep quality. Adding oil to diffusers or even spraying some scent onto your pillow in the evening can make such a difference to your sleep patterns.

Chamomile

We all know a chamomile tea will chill us out in the evening, but not enough people take advantage of it. The taste and scent can be really good for promoting relaxation, while you can also drop some essential oils into a warm bath and just drift off into a state of tranquility.

Of course, you’ll find plenty of candles and diffusers too, which are perfect for any part of the house.

Bergamot

This citrusy scent comes from the peel of the bergamot orange and is known for its mood-boosting properties. The refreshing aroma can alleviate stress, while also improving mood and promoting a real sense of wellbeing.

Scented candles or room sprays can be really uplifting and bring a bright and energising atmosphere into a space.

Sandalwood

This warm and woody scent is good for soothing and making you feel grounded, so is really useful for stress and especially good for meditation. Light a candle while doing your daily relaxation routine and feel the benefit.

Alternatively, burning sandalwood incense sticks can help create a serene and peaceful atmosphere, ideal for unwinding after a long day.

Eucalyptus

Finally, eucalyptus is a refreshing scent known for aiding with breathing and stress relief. It provides a cooling aroma that can help clear the mind and make you focus on combatting stress rather than being bogged down by it.

Using essential oils and candles is one option, while hanging eucalyptus branches in your shower can create a spa-like experience that can promote relaxation and be incredibly revitalising. It really will wash away the stresses of the day and leave you feeling like a new person ahead of a chilled out evening.
