A survey by an Exeter hearing centre revealed 40 per cent of people feel embarrassed or anxious about hearing loss.

Specsavers Hearing Centre Exeter conducted research at the Exeter 50+ Show, polling visitors at the annual gathering about their perceptions of hearing loss, which affects one in six people in the UK.

Results also revealed 78 per cent of people feel unable to join in conversations in some social situations due to background noise, while 29 per cent of people have pretended to know what someone was saying despite not being able to hear them.

Donna Morgan, hearing aid audiologist at Specsavers Hearing Centre Exeter, says: "The results of our hearing awareness survey were very revealing and show hearing loss is having a big impact on people’s everyday lives.

"As hearing specialists, we’re passionate about helping people overcome any embarrassment or anxiety they may feel about having hearing loss, and, ultimately, helping them manage their hearing loss.

"We encourage people not to suffer in silence and to make hearing tests part of their regular healthcare routines."

With one in six people in the UK currently suffering from some form of hearing loss, and this figure expected to exceed 14.5 million by 2031, over 50s are advised to have their hearing checked every two years. With the introduction of new battery technology, modern types of discreet rechargeable hearing aids are a good option for people who feel embarrassed about hearing loss.
