Tips to Stop and Reduce Hair Loss
Are you worried about hair loss? If so, the good news is there are various ways in which you can help to reduce or stop your hair falling out. Check out the following excellent tips.
Change Your Diet
According to a 2018 study, a Mediterranean diet of fresh vegetables and herbs can decrease the risk of androgenetic alopecia or slow its onset. The results of the study were observed after participants consumed large amounts of those foods, such as salad greens, basil, and parsley, more than three days each week. Getting the right amount of protein could also help. Hair follicles are mainly made from a protein called keratin. Although studies are not conclusive, several research studies have shown that a rich diet of protein could potentially prevent hair loss. Foods like nuts, eggs, beans, fish, chicken, and low-fat dairy products are recommended.
Use Minoxidil
The medication minoxidil is widely used for treating hair loss. It is effective in promoting hair growth in both men and women. It works by shedding old hairs and replacing them with new ones. Studies show that approximately two-thirds of men experience regrowth of hair after three to six months of using minoxidil for hair loss. But it must be used indefinitely to continue the support of existing hair follicles and maintaining hair regrowth. Minoxidil is available in spray form. It should be applied twice daily to get the maximum benefits.
Use Crude Onion Juice
Although research studies are inconclusive, many suggest that people with alopecia areata could see hair regrowth by applying crude onion juice to their scalps twice daily. Scientists believe it is the sulphur in the onion that helps to regrow hair follicles. In one study in 2014, 87% of participants saw an improvement in hair growth.
Use Essential Oils
Essential oils could potentially reduce hair loss. A study conducted in 1998 divided 86 people with alopecia areata into two groups. The group that rubbed cedarwood oil mixed with rosemary and lavender into their scalps saw a 43% improvement in their conditions after seven months. Other essential oils like lemongrass, lavender and peppermint may also help to reduce hair loss. Apply those essential oils to your scalp for about ten minutes before washing, and see if you notice changes over time.
Take Supplements
Scientists have proven that vitamins A, B, C, D, and iron, zinc, and selenium, are all vital for the hair growth and retention process. All of those supplements are available from pharmacies and various shops. Other supplements are good for hair regrowth too. For instance, biotin is involved with the fatty acid synthesis that occurs in your body, and it is vital for the hair life cycle. So, ask your doctor about taking a supplement of five milligrams of biotin daily. Saw palmetto, which is a fruit derived from the American dwarf pine trees, can also be used for the improvement of hair growth. A daily dosage of 200 milligrams is recommended. Another supplement that may help hair growth is ginseng, due to it containing specific phytochemicals.
Undergo Platelet-rich Plasma Treatment
If you are experiencing major hair loss, you could go down the medical treatment route. One option is to inject platelet-rich plasma into the scalp. It helps to stimulate hair growth in areas that have already been impacted by hair loss. In a 2017 study, 11 participants had a 30% increase in hair growth after just four sessions of the platelet-rich plasma treatment. However, each session costs hundreds of pounds.
