Back to the roots
The comforts of modern life would be unimaginable to our ancestors. There is a fair amount of stress in our lives, but we don’t have to fight for our survival. If we are unlucky, we could end up losing our job or screwing up yet another relationship, but the chances are, we won’t be starving. This privilege is not without a price; we spend most of our lives sitting in front of computers, worrying about things that ultimately don’t matter. On the other hand, we don’t fear that any wild animals could stalk us; most of us are also safe from the elements. It doesn’t mean, though, that just because something is safer, choosing it is better for us. A constant state of threat results in cortisol spikes and makes any long-term planning inefficient. Too much safety, though, is detrimental for our brains as well - that’s why we must keep on trying things that we find challenging.
One way to put yourself to the test is to go on an RV trip. Many things could go wrong, especially if you don't have much experience. And that’s good. Only when we are faced with adversity, can we measure our skills. It doesn’t mean that you have to go alone to the Amazonian rainforest with only a backpack. You don’t need to eschew modern technology altogether, just be smart about it. You won’t need an extensive collection of movies. Sure, there will be times when you’ll be too tired to do anything more than to lie down and watch some films, but that isn’t likely to happen often. If you are unsure about what you should bring, then just experiment! The worst-case scenario, you’ll experience some inconveniences. That’s fine.
