Change of collection day for council’s waste and recycling services to affect half of Cranbrook’s households

All residents to receive letters and bin hangers confirming collection days and dates

In the course of its planned development, East Devon’s newest town, Cranbrook has already grown significantly, which not surprisingly has an impact on the services that we provide, such as the waste and recycling collections. Maintaining the efficiency of this service is one of our priorities – our objective is to keep Cranbrook looking good and to meet our customers’ requirements. Consequently we need to change the waste and recycling collection day for a number of properties in Cranbrook.

A letter will be sent to all residents to confirm whether their collection day and date will or won’t change – approximately half of Cranbrook’s households will have their collection day changed from a Friday to a Monday – the rest will stay the same.

Despite the change of day (for some households), it is important that all residents are aware that recycling collections are weekly and waste collections are fortnightly. Recycling remains a critical aspect of our service as it produces economic benefits for the community, as well as helping the environment, so it is important that residents do as much as they can to recycle their waste.

Why the change at Cranbrook?

With over 1,000 homes occupied and more to follow shortly, this has affected our contractors, whose waste and recycling vehicles/crew only have capacity to collect from around 900 homes each day, with two tipping off trips during the day. This means having to split our collections into two different days.

Change of collection day

Unaffected households – Collections will continue as usual on Fridays.
Affected households – Collections will continue as normal up to and including 5 June 2015. The next collection will be on Monday 15 June for refuse and recycling. There will be no collection on Friday 12 June of refuse or recycling. On Monday 22 June there will be a recycling only collection and the next week will be a waste and recycling collection, and so on.
In anticipation of any additional pressure that this change of date may place on households, we are allowing one additional bag of waste to be collected from each household on 15 June, which can be placed at the side of the bin.

Bin hangers

To help residents understand the transition, we will also be providing all households with a new bin hanger, confirming their collection day, together with useful tips about waste and recycling as well as general  information about the service we provide.

Roadshow

To help with the change in collection day, our Waste Management Team will be holding a roadshow at the Younghayes Centre, at Cranbrook Market on Thursday 4 June, from 5.30-7pm. We will be happy to discuss any waste or recycling matters including the day change. We welcome feedback from Cranbrook’s residents, and we want to reassure them that the quality of our waste and recycling service will remain as high as ever.

Commenting on the change to Cranbrook’s collection dates, an East Devon District Council spokesperson said: “It is our policy to provide a first class recycling and waste collection service across East Devon. A well operated collection service not only helps maintain our beautiful countryside, but also contributes to reducing the level of residual waste collected (we have one of the lowest rates in the country for disposal) and it is our aim to continually improve and refine our management of recycling and waste. Recycling is one of our biggest priorities and we want to improve our recycling rate while maintaining or reducing the cost to the householder.”

From 8 June, residents can download a calendar of the new dates by visiting eastdevon.gov.uk/my-bin. Alternatively, if any householders have any concerns they can call our Customer Services Team on 01395 571515.
