Devon residents, who want to recycle their food and garden waste but don’t know how, can pick up some top tips and advice from the experts at a Compost Roadshow.

During August and September Recycle Devon, a partnership of 10 Devon councils, is holding roadshows at various locations throughout the county.

Visitors to the roadshows will be able to pick up a discounted compost bin, enter a prize draw and receive some one-to-one advice.

Residents who sign a pledge to compost more, use their food waste collection or sign up to the Recycle Devon e-newsletter, could win a luxury hamper.

The hamper is packed full of food and gardening goodies including food waste gadgets and tasty Devon produce.

The Recycle Devon team will also be there to answer any composting or recycling related questions.

Composting is the most effective way to reduce waste and help the planet, and at least 30% of the contents in an average household bin can be composted.

Composting at home over 12 months can reduce carbon emissions equivalent to that produced by a kettle in a year or a washing machine over three months.

Councillor Andrea Davis, Devon County Council’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for waste said:

“If more people composted their food and garden waste it would have a big impact in helping the planet.

“So if you are interested in composting, but don’t know where to start, come along to one of the roadshows and our team will provide some handy tips.

“Not only will you cut down on waste in your bin but you could save money too by not buying shop-bought compost.”
