5 ways to decorate your room with a guitar
With an estimated 16 million players in the US alone, there are a lot of guitars out there! Whether it’s rock n roll, pop, jazz or country, the guitar is the centerpiece of many of the most popular genres of music – and they don’t look half bad either!
However, even if you’re not a guitar player, you can use them as a wonderful decoration for a music room, an office, or even a living room. According to KillerGuitarRigs.com, the best way to display a guitar (and keep it out of the hands of kids and pets) is to mount it on the wall, but there are many options for every different situation.
We’re going to outline five of the most common and popular ways to keep your guitars within sight at all times, and maybe even add a little harmony to the decoration of your room.
Leave it out
A favorite of students everywhere, this popular option is great for giving your place a bohemian vibe. You probably don’t want to use an expensive guitar for this option, and if you have kids – keep walking! However, if your place is pretty relaxed and has the space for it, leaving your guitar resting against a chair or sitting on the sofa is a great way to add a musical vibe without having to do anything more than place a guitar!
If you don’t already own a guitar, this can be a great option for displaying a cheap second hand guitar that you’ve picked up – especially if it’s something cool looking like a classical guitar. Just try to get someone who knows what they’re doing to tune it for you now and again, or your visitors will find themselves strumming a tuneless mess when they come by.
Single Stand
If you want a single guitar displayed in your room, but you want it to have it’s own space on the ground, a single stand is a great option. You can of course pay any amount of money, but for as little as $15 you can get a stand to keep your guitar standing in one place with much less change of it getting knocked over. You can also resist the urge to put your guitar stand in a corner and instead place it by a window or build a little creative corner by putting it by a bookcase or writing desk. Easy to see why this is a popular option – but as with the previous option, be careful with kids – you might find your guitar taking a tumble.
Multi Guitar Stand
While many if not most guitarists have just one guitar, there are a ton of us with collections ranging from two or three guitars to guitars into the double or triple figures! If you want to display a few guitars in one of your rooms – maybe your Les Paul collection, or a variety of acoustic guitars and electric guitars, a multi guitar stand (or guitar rack) is a great option.
As with the single stand, you can really spend as much as you want, but Amazon has racks for as little as $40 that will allow you to hold five or more guitars on the floor of your room.
This is a great option for music rooms or home offices, though unless your living room is on the larger size, it might take up a little too much space for a high traffic area – and as ever, with kids in the house, you run the risk of your guitars getting bashed around pretty good.
Wall Mounted
Pretty much all major and independent music stores use a combination of wall mounts and floor stands for guitars, but most guitars are hung from the walls to maximize space.
This means it’s a great option for smaller rooms, as you don’t really need to use any floor space for the guitar, you just need to buy a $15 wall hanger and figure out where there’s a guitar shaped space on the wall to hang your favored instrument.
Wall mounting a guitar is also a great option for people with kids – you can put the guitar at a height that looks good, is accessible to adults, but is out of reach of grubby little hands.
The only possible downside here is you will need to drill screws or bolts into your wall. You’ll also want to make sure the mount isn’t just hanging off bare plasterboard – you want to make sure there’s something decent back there. Fortunately you can buy a stud finder for cheap, and if you’re an experienced DIYer, it’s a tool you’ll use over and over anyway.
Display case
This is probably the ultimate level, and if your house is already something of a castle, a display case is probably the way to go.
There are a ton of benefits here – you’re keeping the guitar away from kids and other hazards, you can light your guitar to make it look extra cool, and you can surround the guitar in the case with all kinds of other fun music stuff, such as the covers of your favorite albums.
Display cases are also the only way you should consider to display an expensive guitar. If you have a $5000 Gibson Les Paul custom, you would be foolish in the extreme to just leave it lying against the couch, and leaving it on a single stand in your living room risks it getting knocked over.
However, with a good sturdy display case, you can feel comfortable keeping your pride and joy out for display without worrying about it getting damaged in any way.
Conclusion
Whichever way you decide to display your guitars, the best thing about having them in the areas you spend time is that there’s always a guitar within reach when you get the urge, whether it’s sitting on a guitar stand or hanging on the wall. The upside for regular players is that this encourages you to get an idea out when inspiration hits – and for new players, it’s a reminder to practice, practice, practice!
