I’m from the countryside, a town surrounded by hills and lakes and sheep, but like many of my peers, I now live in the city.

It’s a reality of work. Sometimes you may have to compromise for a while when you are getting established within your profession.

With that being said, you don’t have to live in a super sleek modernist apartment just because that’s what the apartments to the left and right of you look like.

If you’re going to be city-based for the next few years, why not bring in that country aesthetic, make it your home away from home. We all get homesick sometimes so it’s nice to have your current home reflect the one that you came from.

Here are just some of the decor options that will make your apartment feel more homely and familiar.

Bring Something Along With You

So here’s an easy one to make your new home feel like your older countryside home; simply bring something along.

Maybe it’s that rug that has been in the living room for years and years, or it’s that jar that you have kept your keys in.

If something really reminds you of ‘home’ then bring it along (so long as everyone in the house is okay with it).

It’s a quick and easy way to create a direct link between your current city home and the place that you come from.

Copy Your Home’s Wallpaper

Better yet, if there’s space up in the attic you can have the exact same walls, although a similar one will do just fine too.

While everyone chases that simplistic grey modern stuff you could opt for something patterned or floral.

It will bring out that countryside vibe and it’s also usually a tad cheaper as one of the less popular options, win-win!

Capture The Traditional Charm

If you’re going to be staying in your flat for the foreseeable future you can invest in some more permanent fixtures.

An old-fashioned column radiator from Trade Radiators might be just what you need to bring out that traditional charm.

Or maybe it’s the armchair that looks just like the one in the corner of your sitting room. Or the hard oak chest of drawers.

If it sparks joy it’s worth investing in more long-term home fixtures that make you feel at home, and as an added bonus, that charm will set your home aside from the rest.

Paintings And Photos

A simple and easy way to get that countryside look is to bring in pictures of the countryside, whether it’s a photo of the hills or a painting of a cow.

You can see it as a window into the countryside that is there day and night.

Houseplants

Last but not least, bring in some houseplants, it makes your home feel more alive and less modern.

With more and more succulents available it’s not even that much upkeep, just water, and a feed every week or so.

It adds some vibrancy and combats the greyness often found in cities, and as someone from a countryside town, you’ll feel at home with all of the natural greenness.
