New recycling campaign highlights importance of recycled food waste
Teignbridge District Council have launched a new food waste recycling campaign, aimed at reducing leftover waste in your food caddie and encouraging greater awareness of food waste recycling.
The campaign, which runs from 12 February for four weeks, will see information leaflets, bin stickers, bus shelters, supermarket digital screens all highlighting the importance of food waste recycling and how even the smallest change can make a difference.
Teignbridge is holding information road shows, from 10am to 2pm, across the district. Officers will be around to offer advice, answer questions and give tips to help reduce and recycle food waste even more.

A recent waste analysis on a sample group of households in Teignbridge, highlighted that the largest percentage of recyclable waste (22%) in the leftovers waste system came from food waste. Acting on this, the campaign will see waste advisors out and about completing door stepping surveys where specific resident groups and new housing estates will be encouraged to get involved. Before and after monitoring will take place to help assess the impact of the campaign.
If you’re not sure of how to dispose of food waste in your caddie then here’s a few helpful tips:
- To line your caddie you can use plastic bags on a roll, such as pedal bin liners or reuse plastic bags you already have. Don’t just thrown away old supermarket bags that are coming to the end of their life as these are ideal to reuse.
- When you’ve finished with your food bags, such as bread, salad or cereal ones, these can also be used. They are perfect for lining your food caddie and removing smelly food into your outside food waste bin straight away. All you need to do is tie them up and drop them straight in.
Cllr Kevin Lake, Teignbridge District Council’s Executive for Environment Services, said: “It’s encouraging to see that many people already do a great job recycling their food waste and are doing their bit towards making Teignbridge a cleaner and greener district.
"This food waste campaign is about encouraging and helping people to reduce their food waste as every little bit counts but they may not be aware of how to do it. You may not have thought about it but even by reducing your food waste then this can stretch your food budget by buying less.
“We’ve had weekly food bin collections in place since 2015 and campaigns like this highlight the importance of reducing food waste and how we can go about achieving it.”
