Former Gemini, Heart and Radio Exe radio presenter Matt Young has unveiled a new networking initiative - Who Needs Instructions – to provide practical support for men to help them overcome mental health challenges.

With suicide rates amongst men at an all-time high, Matt believes that if men felt better able to talk to each other about the stuff that really matters, it would help prevent many from reaching crisis point.

Having spent over 20 years as a broadcaster, Matt has honed his own communication skills and now wants to encourage others to do the same.

“I’ve always been an open book, able to share my feelings with others and I feel like this has helped me from spiralling ever downwards, to a point of despair,” reveals Matt.

“I have seen too many men keep their emotions bottled up inside, and sometimes, sadly, that can end in tragedy.”

Who Needs Instructions CIC (www.whoneedsinstructions.com) is a not-for-profit organisation that aims to get men talking more through regular events that bring them together to create a brotherhood.

“The name, Who Needs Instructions, is a tongue-in-cheek reference to men who refuse to read instruction manuals or accept directions when navigating somewhere, when in fact we all probably do.”

Matt adds: “There will be loads of activities like days out at the football, rugby, and cricket, as well as walking, swimming, and hiking, and getting guys to try new stuff too, like yoga, journaling, or meditation. Members will all benefit from discounts at various locations in and around the city too.”

The aim of the group is to create a brotherhood of men who look out for and support each other. Many men lead very busy lives and Matt believes a lot of guys just don’t look after themselves or their mental wellbeing nearly as much as their female counterparts.

“A lot of guys want to be the best at everything…the best father, the best husband, uncle, boss, or colleague. But we can’t do that unless we give ourselves a little time too,” says Matt.

“So, I want guys to take a break from their busy schedules and recharge their batteries so they can return to their families and places of work and feel ready to give their best.

“The membership of Who Needs Instructions will try out new experiences, all whilst learning how to communicate better. Men will soon find - like some of us have already discovered - that relying on and being open with each other is a great thing to do; it’s a win win for everyone.”
