Couple celebrate Emerald wedding anniversary with Macmillan Coffee Morning
Frances and Edward Canning from Heavitree, Exeter are celebrating 55 years of marriage by renewing their vows and raising vital funds for people living with cancer by hosting a Macmillan Coffee Morning.
Having both been diagnosed in 2017 with cancer, Frances with breast cancer and Edward with melanoma, they decided to host their first ever Macmillan Coffee Morning after realising it fell on 28th September which is the same date as their emerald wedding anniversary. The couple will renew their vows at Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Church, Fore Street, Heavitree, EX1 2QJ at 9:30am followed by their Macmillan Coffee Morning and anniversary celebrations next door at the Richard Reynolds Centre at 10:30am. There will be a guess the weight of the Emerald Wedding cake, made by local cake maker Ivy Campbell, a raffle and of course coffee and cake. The service and coffee morning are open to all to come along and raise money for Macmillan.
Exeter-based Frances Canning explained: “When we realised that Macmillan’s Coffee Morning fell on the same day as our emerald wedding anniversary, we decided to do something special. Having both been diagnosed with cancer and undergoing surgery in the same year, we thought it would be a good way to celebrate our amazing 55 years of being married and raise some much-needed funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.”

Macmillan’s Coffee Morning takes place on Friday 28th September (but people can host theirs whenever you want) and it couldn’t be easier to get involved. All you need to do is bring your community together - whether it’s friends, family, colleagues or others - and raise money for Macmillan.
The first Macmillan Coffee Morning took place in 1990, when a handful of people came together for a cup of coffee and a slice of cake, and made a donation to Macmillan to help support people living with cancer. And while Coffee Morning has grown over the years - with some 200,000 people planning on taking part across the country in 2017 - the idea remains as simple as ever: come together in support of people living with cancer and raise money for Macmillan. In 2017, there were over 190 coffee mornings held in Exeter, raising more than £31,000 for people living with cancer.
With the number of people living with cancer constantly growing, your support this Coffee Morning has never been more important. Approximately every £1,000 raised could pay for a Macmillan nurse for a week - helping people living with cancer and their families receive essential medical, practical and emotional support.
