Exeter food charity benefitting from Community Lottery ticket sales
A charity that helps distribute food to vulnerable people in Exeter is just one of around 100 good causes that are currently benefitting from the Exeter Community Lottery.
Exeter Food Action recently signed up to the fundraising lottery and hopes ticket sales will help them continue to support those in need across the city.
When people play the weekly lottery they have a chance to choose which good cause to support. Fifty pence in every pound then goes to that cause, with 10p going towards the Exeter Central Fund. The rest of the money pays for prizes and the administration of the lottery. At the moment good causes are set to benefit from around £48,000 in total over the first 12 months.
Players of the lottery can also choose to nominate the money to a central fund which then gets distributed among good causes that are signed up.
Andy Kemp, a Trustee of Exeter Food Action, said money raised from the Community Lottery would go towards ongoing costs the not-for-profit organisation incurs in rescuing and delivering surplus food from supermarkets, manufacturers and producers.
“Any funds will go towards getting good quality, nutritious food onto the tables of people who need it but who might otherwise be unable to afford it.”
Exeter Food Action deliver food to over 50 food banks and community groups in Exeter and across Devon, providing support every week to hundreds of families and individuals experiencing food poverty. They have 52 volunteers and one full-time member of staff keeping the operation ticking over.
“Demand has risen, as have costs, so we’re exploring every possibility to increase our income streams, the lottery being one,” added Andy.
Cllr Martin Pearce, Lead Councillor with responsibility for Communities, said: “Playing Exeter Community Lottery is a great way of supporting community groups and charities like Exeter Food Action…good causes on our doorstep.”
It’s not too late for other community groups and good causes to sign up for Exeter Community Lottery and start benefitting from ticket sales. Groups that sign up and are approved by 23 December have a chance of winning a £3,000 Christmas cash bonus!
