Congratulations to the University of Exeter’s winter graduates
Hundreds of students have been honoured for their years of hard work at winter graduation ceremonies at the University of Exeter.
More than 2,600 students, from 89 countries, graduated from 250 different prestigious courses. They were joined by 6,000 guests, there to wish them well.
Most of those graduating had studied MA and MSc and postgraduate diploma courses in a wide range of subjects. They have trained to be teachers, radiographers and healthcare workers.
Professor Lisa Roberts, University of Exeter Vice Chancellor and President, said: “We are delighted to celebrate with our wonderful students. Seeing them mark this occasion with their loved ones is always a highlight of the year. It is very special to be able to honour their hard work over many years.”
Gerry Brown, a business book author and independent chairman and director, received an honorary degree.
Gerry was educated at The Universities of Exeter and Reading and The London Business School. He was a member of the Council of The University of Exeter and Chair of the Audit Committee as well as an Associate of Critical Eye. He also mentors Chief Executives and was an elected member of Berkshire County Council, where he served on the Education Committee and chaired several boards of school governors.
Gerry chairs a large global specialised Private Equity Fund focused on life sciences based in the USA. He was an independent director of clinical research organisation Quintiles and chaired the medical devices company Biocompatibles PLC.
He was Operations Director of Exel plc (now DHL), then a Board member of TDG plc and Chairman of Europe for Tibbett and Britten plc. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Directors and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics.
Gerry chairs the Fundraising Board at The University of Exeter which has, so far, raised over £120 million.
More recently, Gerry and his wife founded a charitable trust to support Colombian students studying for higher education. He chairs the family consulting business G Brown Associates Ltd.
This year the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences saw the first graduates from MSc Clinical Psychology, MSc Neuroscience and MSc Sports Management, as well as the first graduates from two degree apprenticeships - MSc Diagnostic Radiography and Imaging, and MSc Advanced Clinical Practice.
MSc Clinical Psychology graduate, Rose Diebel, said: “I had a really good time with the course. It’s not easy, but it’s not meant to be easy and its fulfilling in its difficulty. I really enjoyed the modules and feel like I've learnt a lot and made some great friends and contacts. The lecturers were very supportive, happy to answer questions, and incredibly receptive to feedback and your input.”
MSc Sports Management graduate, Emmet Meehan, said: “The great thing about the course is it's very modular, so you have a lot of options in terms of what you want to get out of it. There was so much support for any problem you’re having, whether it’s personal or academic. It felt like the university was very invested in you and that support has been vital to my success. I couldn’t recommend Exeter more.”
