Axe Valley Community Choir strikes a chord with former member at Seaton Care Home
A total of 28 members of the Axe Valley Community Choir joined former bass singer 92-year-old Ron Styles, now a resident at The Seaton Care Home, for a special reunion performance. The 85-strong Axe Valley Community Choir, was formed in 2009 to bring people of all ages and abilities to enjoy singing together, as well as participating in fundraising events within the community. Ron had been a popular member of the choir before setting up residence in the care home in February and has been sorely missed.
On the day, the choir even brought their own piano and filled the home with music, ably supported by Ron who serenaded staff, residents and visitors, including his son, daughter and granddaughter. A former prominent businessman based in Axminster, Ron was well known in the local community as he owned long-established Axminster Tools & Machinery, which is now run by his son, Bernie Styles. He said: “The enthusiasm and support for my Dad was overwhelming and it was a wonderful experience with such a strong sense of community and loyalty to him. It was a lovely afternoon and I know he has missed singing with the choir and thoroughly enjoyed it.”
Edward Jacobs, Musical Director - Axe Valley Community Choir said: “Ron was a key member of the group and has been much missed, and because he can no longer come to us, we wanted to bring the choir to him. It was an absolute joy to sing with Ron again, and our bass section really hasn’t been the same without him.” He adds: “We sang a selection of old favourites and classics, enabling people to join in, and it was hard to find a dry-eye in the room. It’s been a fantastic experience singing with everyone in The Seaton and great to see that Ron has settled so well into his new home. I want to take this opportunity to thank Emma and her team at The Seaton, for making this experience possible.”
The ethos of the 28-bed care home, located near the seafront of Seaton, believes in making it a ‘home away from home’ and creating a relaxed and comfortable environment for both residents and visitors. By bringing the outside in, and being a part of the local community, contributes greatly to this established philosophy.
Emma Seal, Home Manager – The Seaton Care Home concludes: “Ron joined us at the beginning of the year, because of his age and level of frailty, however, he is still a very vibrant and passionate man. He was so excited and happy about the visit, and having the choir here created such a buzz for everyone. It has proved so popular that I am delighted to say the choir is joining us again at Christmas, which will be so uplifting at such a special time of year.”
