Exeter nurse features in health podcasts
An NHS team in Exeter has helped to produce a series of educational videos about bladder and bowel care for children and young people.
Fiona Boorman, a paediatric nurse specialist in the integrated bladder and bowel care team based at Franklyn House, was selected to be the face of the podcasts.
The videos were a joint venture between the service, which is managed by the Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust, and Virgin Care’s public health nursing team in the Crediton area.
The three videos are entitled ‘The importance of fluid intake for children and young people’, ‘Bladder control and potential problems’ and ‘Bowel control and potential problems’.
The videos are available on YouTube and are initially being used to increase knowledge among staff at local schools and pre-schools, with a view to extending their reach across Devon.
Fiona trained at the Hospital for Sick Children in London, now known as Great Ormond Street Hospital, and has been nursing for 37 years.
She does ad-hoc training on bladder and bowel care issues for ERIC, a national children’s continence charity.
She said: “I am passionate about encouraging people to help children achieve good continence, particularly those with additional needs.”
Fiona’s colleague Claire Lindsay, the team’s clinical and professional lead, has also been raising awareness of paediatric bladder and bowel care.
She was asked to submit an article for Gastrointestinal Nursing, the UK journal for gastrointestinal and stoma care nurses.
Claire appeared in a feature called Centre Stage, looking at the life of a specialist paediatric bladder and bowel care nurse.
