We all like to make our money work harder. Here in Devon, there are several good habits we can implement into our daily lives to ensure we’re driving more economically.

From navigating those wavy country lanes to making a trip down the A38, driving through Devon can test all your elements.

Amid the rising and unpredictable fuel prices, as well as a cost of living crisis, we’ve compiled five helpful tips to drive more efficiently in Devon.

  1. Go electric

If you really want to commit to making a positive change on our roads, consider switching to an electric car.

Car leasing is one of the most effective methods of getting behind the wheel of a brand-new EV for a fraction of the cost.

Fixed monthly payments and flexible lease terms allow you to create the best deal for your circumstances, whether that’s as a personal customer or as a business.

Leasing allows you to pay for the vehicle monthly over a set term, negating the need to fork out for the increased outright cost of an EV.

  1. Watch that speed

Throughout Devon, there’s a large spread of country lanes and dual carriageways which create a huge variance in the speed limits that need to be obeyed.

Excessive speed is the biggest contributor to inefficient vehicles. Reducing your speed to ensure you’re always following the speed limit, or in some cases, staying safely below it, will increase your fuel consumption.

During 2022, there were 353 deaths or serious injuries from road traffic collisions in Devon, with inappropriate or excessive speed cited as one of the main causes.

Pay particular attention to your speed when driving through those infamous country lanes. Many will come with a national speed limit, but this will not be necessary or safe. These lanes can be filled with sharp bends and uneven surfaces that will catch out drivers going too fast.

Staying at a respectable but safe speed gives you enough opportunity to react to any oncoming traffic.

  1. Walk where you can

Take advantage of the many beautiful countryside and costal walks we have on our doorsteps in Devon.

Plan ahead and when those last-minute trips into town or to the shop pop up, ask yourself, ‘could I walk this?’

It’s an easy way to stay active and get those daily steps in while also saving your fuel for more important journeys. This can be particularly prevalent when you lease a car, where mileage restrictions could apply.

  1. Reduce unnecessary weight

Our family cars are an extension of our homes and often used as a dumping ground.

By the time you factor in the pushchair for the baby, those spare pair of walking boots and the parcels you keep meaning to take inside, you will be shocked to learn how much excess weight we carry in our vehicles.

The additional weight places further strain on your vehicle and thus, your fuel efficiency. Reducing the weight where possible could be the marginal difference that helps stretch your money further.

  1. Be conscious of your air-conditioning usage

Air conditioning is a modern day perk of many cars and can be a god send on those hot summer days, especially after coming off the back of a heatwave.

However, do be aware of the ramifications it can have on your fuel efficiency.

It is widely reported that when driving below speeds of between 40 and 45mph you should refrain from using the air-con and instead open your windows. Driving below those speeds will have minimal drag effect, meaning it is more efficient for you to let the natural air in.

There are lots of myths and old wives’ tales on how to achieve the best mpg, but remember, a conscientious driver will always win out.

Never sacrifice the safety of yourself, your passengers and fellow road users in your efforts to maximise fuel efficiency.
