Choosing a wedding photographer is often a lot easier said than done. In fact if you’ve already started to look at different photographers and go through your options, you may find yourself feeling at a loss and unsure how to begin deciding which is best.

To make sure that you choose the right wedding photographer for your big day, there are five factors in particular that you should look at closely:

  • Style

Ideally before you look at photographers, you should first decide on the style of wedding photos that you want – be it traditional, formal, photojournalistic, artistic, or something else. Based on that decision you can then look for a wedding photographer that specializes in that style.

  • Experience

More experienced wedding photographers are generally more skillful, and will be able to capture important moments that beginners may miss. In some cases they may even be able to deal better with challenging lighting, coordinate group shots more effectively, and so on.

In addition to the number of years they’ve been in the business, you should also consider whether or not that experience is relevant to the style of wedding photography that you want.

  • Portfolio

The clearest way to actually see what your wedding photographer is capable of is to look at their portfolio. That will let you check out the quality of their photos, style, and give you an idea of what you can expect from them.

Keep in mind that the contents of a portfolio are generally a selection consisting of the ‘best of the best’. In other words if you aren’t fully convinced by them, it is a very big red flag that you should not ignore.

  • Cost

It should go without saying that you need to consider the cost of hiring a photographer and make sure it is within your wedding budget. Needless to say, more experienced photographers do charge more, but it really boils down to the packages and whether or not you can negotiate a good deal.

The key to choosing a wedding photographer that is cost-effective is to identify what you really need, and avoid paying for extras that you don’t.

  • Personality

Although often overlooked, the personality of the wedding photographer is an important factor to consider. At the end of the day you’re going to be have to work closely with them on the day itself when the pressure could be intense.

Simply put you should make it a point to choose someone that you jive with and can work with under pressure.

Initially it may be best to look at photographers that are local to your area, and you could start with Devon wedding photography experts. It may help to get recommendations from your friends and family too.

While you should book your wedding photographer as early as possible, you shouldn’t rush it either. It is important that you look at each of the factors described above, and carefully consider your options from all angles.
