51-year-old arrested after 12hr armed siege

Update: The man has been released from police custody into the care of mental health professionals.

                Police will take no further action.

A 51-year-old man was arrested in Teignmouth this morning, following a 12 hour armed standoff with police.

Police were called to the house on Fourth Avenue at 13:45 after a man was reported to have locked himself in a house with a hammer and samurai sword.

Officers cordoned off the street and called for assistance from police negotiators and armed responders.

Following negotiations, the 51-year-old man police entered the home at around 1.50am this morning and arrested the man on suspicion of threats to kill and threatening with a blade.

The man is in custody at Torquay Police Station.

No-one was injured in the incident.
