Losing a loved one is a terribly difficult time for anyone to go through. Organising a funeral is one way of keep yourself occupied during this mourning period, but trying to find the right way to say goodbye isn’t easy. Although it comes at a sad time, a funeral should celebrate the life of the person who’s passed on. Therefore, it should best reflect who they were as a person. Not everyone will fit the traditional style of ceremony, so here’s some alternative ideas if you want to give your loved one the send-off they deserve.

Burial at Sea

Traditionally, this sort of funeral has been used for members of the navy or sailors. However, this doesn’t mean that this kind of ceremony is exclusive to people who are part of those organisations. If the one you lost was a lover of the ocean or enjoyed spending time on the coast, perhaps this could be a good way to honour their memory. These types of burials can be carried out on boats or aircraft, dependant on your preference.

New Orleans Style

While this type of funeral is set in the traditions of the city, they do differ to regular types of ceremony. Jazz funerals include a procession through the streets, accompanied by the music of a brass band that makes up the sounds of classic New Orleans jazz. Traditional black attire is usually worn, although mourners wearing colourful clothing is an option. This style of funeral is a wonderful send-off for someone who loved living life to the fullest or was a fan of jazz music and a good party.

Space Exploration

Although at this point in time it’s not feasible to hold a memorial service in space, there are options to send the deceased’s remains there. It is a truly unique way to celebrate a person’s life and allows their remains to become part of the earth’s atmosphere. Aura Flight is a British company that scatters ashes in space as an alternative burial method. This futuristic ceremony is perfect for those who loved sci-fi, as it sends them off into the ‘final frontier’.

Woodland Burial

woodland burial plan takes the ceremony back to very simplistic roots. This type of funeral often takes place in forests or woodland areas, although places like meadows can also be used. These serene spots provide an idyllic resting place for the dead; it might even be possible to bury them in an area they cherished. Headstones aren’t permitted as part of woodland burials, but a tree or bush can be planted to mark the grave instead. If the person you lost was a lover of nature, this sort of burial could make an ideal final resting place for them.

Death is an inevitability of life, but this doesn’t make it any easier to deal with when you lose someone you love. You will miss them every day, and wish they were still with you. Although you can’t control life and death, you can honour their memory by giving them the perfect funeral.
