The local event manager joined forces with cheerleaders, Starlights and Exeter Mayor, Cllr Lesley Robson, on Saturday to promote Race for Life and to celebrate its 21st year in Exeter.

The team, along with Cancer Research UK (CRUK) nurse, Mirander, were on hand in Princesshay, to answer questions about Race for Life, fundraising and the impressive strides CRUK scientists are making to treat, diagnose and prevent cancer.

Local cheerleaders, Exeter Starlights (pictured), entertained the crowds with routines throughout the afternoon.

Exeter Pretty Muddy Adults and Kids, and Race for Life 5k & 10k will take place at Westpoint Arena on Saturday 21st July & Sunday 22nd July.

Amy Salmon, Cancer Research UK’s Exeter Event Manager, said: “We’d like to send a huge thank you to everyone in Exeter who has taken part in Race for Life or sponsored a friend, family member or colleague over the past twenty one years.

“We’re absolutely delighted to mark our twenty first birthday in Exeter and we’d like to invite mums, daughters, sisters and friends to help us celebrate this amazing milestone. As it’s a big birthday for us, we’re urging women to help us make it a show-stopping year. It’s a great opportunity to sign up now and plan a fantastic outfit for the big day. By joining like-minded ladies committed to the cause, local women can unite against a disease that affects us all in some way.”

“By raising money, our participants play a crucial role in helping to turn discoveries made in the lab into better treatments for patients in Devon and across the UK.”

Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring women-only series of 5k and Pretty Muddy events which raises millions of pounds every year to help beat cancer sooner by funding vital research.

Cancer Research UK’s life-saving work relies on the public’s support. Thanks to the generosity of its supporters, the charity was able to spend over £2 million last year in the South West on some of the UK’s leading scientific and clinical research - helping more men, women and children survive the disease.

Amy said: “Race for Life events are non-competitive and participants can choose to walk, jog or run around the course. Whether they’re planning a 5k amble, a 10k sprint or a mud-splattered dash around the Pretty Muddy obstacle course, it’s not about being first over the finish line - it’s the taking part that counts.

Amy continued: “Joining the start line at Race for Life is a hugely moving experience. It’s a special opportunity for people to come together to remember loved ones lost to cancer or celebrate the lives of those dear to them who have survived.”

One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some stage in their lives, but the good news is more people are surviving the disease now than ever before. Cancer survival in the UK has doubled since the early 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress.
