Child airlifted after M5 Crash

A child has been airlifted to Frenchay hospital in Bristol following an accident on the M5 near Tiverton.

The child was injured when the car he was travelling in left the slip road at junction 27 and overturned into a ditch.

Although hurt the child’s injuries were not life-threatening and no-one else in the vehicle was badly injured.

Devon and Somerset fire and Rescue confirmed that the car collided with the back of a heavy goods tanker before landing on its roof in the ditch.

The car had three children as passengers and all were assessed by ambulance crews on scene.

The motorway was closed when the child was airlifted from the scene and re-opened a shortly before 2pm.

One lane remains closed as police recover the car -a Peugeot 206- from the road causing delays in the area.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident and ask that they contact police on 101 quoting police  reference 0466 271213.
