Drivers urged to drive with caution due to high winds

People across Devon are being urged to take extra care when travelling this evening and tomorrow with high winds and rain expected in some parts of Devon. (Monday and Tuesday 13/14 January).

High winds are forecast until midnight tonight and tomorrow. The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for the remainder of today and from 12 noon Tuesday 14 January until 12 midnight.

Dunsford Road by Exonia Park in Exeter is currently closed due to a large fallen tree. 

Tomorrow gusts of 80mph are forecast in some parts with the worst of the weather conditions expected over high ground particularly Dartmoor and Exmoor.

Heavy rain is expected to pass through the county with similar conditions forecast tomorrow.

Coastal areas may take the brunt of the wind, but there is the possibility of localised flooding and some trees may be brought down.

High sided vehicles or trailers should be driven with extra care in these conditions. Taw Bridge is being closely monitored and may be closed to high-sided vehicles or all vehicles if wind speed get high enough.

Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Highway Management, said: “We won’t know what the full impact of the weather will be this evening and overnight. Please give yourself plenty of time for your journey tonight and tomorrow in case the weather impacts on the roads. 
“The wind could be strong enough to cause damage so please be aware of the possibility of encountering fallen trees, and the potential of debris on the roads and the possibility of flooding. Problems such as landslips or fallen trees and branches are least likely to be reported on minor roads so people travelling on rural roads should take extra care.”
