Drivers urged to take care on icy roads after collision on A38
Update: The road has now reopened.
Earlier: One man involved in the earlier multi-vehicle road traffic accident on the A38 and has been taken to Derriford Hospital and is said to be in a critical condition.
There were a total of five collisions involving ten vehicles on the A38 Eastbound carriageway.
The A38 at The Parkway in Plymouth is still closed and slow traffic is queuing eastbound between Manadon Roundabout and Forder Valley Interchange, because of accident investigation work. Approach with care.
The road is expected to be closed until 1pm.
Earlier: Just before 6am this morning (22nd January, 2013), emergency service attended the scene of a road traffic collision on the Exeter-bound carriageway of the A38 between Manadon and Marsh Mills.
A number of vehicles had spun off the main road and onto the grass verges. At least one person was seriously injured as a result.
The road has been closed at the Devonport and St Budeaux on slips. The Exeter-bound carriageway is open from the Tamar Bridge but traffic is being directed off at St Budeaux.
Diversions have been set up but there will be inevitable delays for rush hour traffic. Officers at the scene believe that the freezing road conditions may be a contributory factor and are warning motorists to slow down when using any of the roads in the area.
Further collisions on the approach to the scene are also adding to the congestion and motorists are advised delays journeys or avoid the area if possible.
