Elderly man seriously injured in assault

Police are investigating after a 69-year-old man suffered serious head injuries in an unprovoked attack in Torquay.

The man was assaulted by another man on the pathway between Hele Road and Pendennis Road around 11.45pm on Saturday night [6 February].

The victim, from Torquay, was walking home when he was approached by the other man and repeatedly hit about the head.

He sustained multiple skull and facial fractures and was taken to Torbay Hospital.

A 27-year-old man from Torquay has been arrested on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm with intent. He has been released on bail until 16 March pending further police enquiries.

Detectives investigating the assault are appealing for witnesses to the incident to come forward.

The elderly man was wearing a dark green waterproof jacket, beige trousers and black shoes at the time of the incident.

Detective Sergeant Dan Bickford, from Torquay CID, said: “This was a completely unprovoked attack on an elderly man. Not only has he sustained serious injuries but has been left deeply distressed by this incident.

“We would like to hear from anyone who may have seen this assault take place or has any information which can assist with our enquiries.”
