People with disabilities and their carers are invited to experience a festival of activities at a ‘Blue Light Day’ event on Tuesday 29th July 2014. It will be held at South Dartmoor Community College, Ashburton, between 10am–2pm.

The theme of the day is ‘be healthy, be active and be safe’. It aims to help people keep safe and become more confident and independent in their community. It hopes to help break down any barriers that exist between disabled people and the emergency services, so they feel more comfortable in reporting hate crime and accessing support where needed.

“The Blue Light Day is important for so many reasons,” said Sergeant Sally Kingdon from Devon and Cornwall Police.  “It’s a fun and inclusive way for people to work together to ensure that organisations who provide emergency services deliver their services in line with the country’s equality and diversity requirements”.

The event offers a range of activities for people to try out including tag rugby, new age curling, wheelchair football, nordic walking, archery and many more.  Refreshments are available and live music is played throughout the day.

Bobby Singh, health trainer from Roc Active said “We have a common aim to support the most vulnerable in our communities and events like this give people free advice and support around their health and wellbeing”.

Chris Daniel, Sports development manager from South Devon Community College added “This is a great opportunity to promote healthy lifestyles and showcase various activities that people can get involved in”.

Nearly thirty service providers will be on hand to give advice, guidance and information linked to the theme of the day.

Senior officers from Devon and Cornwall police including ACC Paul Netherton, Ch.Supt Paul Davies and Supt Glen Mayhew will be at the event.

The Blue Light day is a partnership initiative supported by many organisations including Devon and Cornwall Police, ROC Active, South Dartmoor Community College, Devon & Fire Rescue Service, South West Ambulance and other private and charitable organisations.

The event is free to attend. Please register your place either online at bookwhen.com/devonbluelightday or telephone Bobby Singh on 07880 173959.
