Exeter comes 2nd in Top 10 most haunted university cities
If Paranormal Activity 4 isn’t enough to give you a sleepless night, maybe we can help. Is your university on the top 10 list of scariest cities in the UK? Sweet dreams!
1. Derby. This midlands city is teeming with scary movie potential. Take a trip to the Bell Inn and you might get some costume inspiration from the resident Victorian Lady in Blue or eighteenth-century chambermaid. Watch out for the poltergeist, though. Otherwise, the Jacobean House is home to the timeless headless coachman, while a ghost woman has been spotted doing a Mo Farah around former school St Helen’s House.
2. Exeter. If you have spiritual persuasions, look out for the rose-scented nuns of Exeter Cathedral. If you’re looking for something a little more hardcore, you’ll also find gamekeepers and executed witches.
3. Newcastle. In 2008, archaeologists dug up two Roman tombs at the site of a former chapel in the city centre. One of which contained the headless body of a six-year-old boy. But if you’re looking for a more concrete experience, get down the pub. In the alleyway of The Cooperage you may well see a man with sockets for eyes on the prowl. Though after a few pints, Homeless Bill could well be mistaken for the undead.
4. St Andrews. A coffin is believed to have been uncovered in this Scottish city in 1868 by two stonemasons. It contained the body of a young woman in a white dress with leather gloves. To this day, you may catch sight of the disturbed spirit of the White Lady’s waist-length hair in the cathedral grounds.
5. York. One survey revealed 500 ghouls to be haunting the walled city, while the 2002 International Ghost Research Foundation named York 'Europe's most haunted city.' Spine-tingling experiences include a troop of Roman legionnaires and the screams of murdered children coming from the Victorian school.
6. Durham. We’re staying up North for another black-and-white tale. The university is haunted by Lady Grey, who prowls the 800-year-old castle staircase where she met her death.
7. Norwich. From former mayors and maids in grey at Maids Head Hotel to the city’s very own Woman in Black at Norwich Castle, this city would keep Yvette Fielding busy.
8. Cambridge. One of the fellows of Christ’s College, Christopher Round, has been said to haunt the school swimming pool. This guilty spirit fell out with his mate over a girl. During their argument, said friend fell into the pool and Round made sure he met his soggy end; hence his sorrowful poolside procession. Too little, too late, Chris.
9. Edinburgh. It doesn’t get much more cliché than a Scottish phantom bagpiper. You might also catch sight of band member the Headless Drummer. In fact, there’s something for everyone at this Scottish uni: animal lovers look out for the phantom black dog.
10. Oxford. We couldn’t really leave out the oldest University. Freshers of Exeter College beware: this site is home to some students you don’t want to be living with in second year. In 1348 most of the students died from the Black Death, and are left to prowl the corridors to this day.
