Exeter school takes part in NSPCC Number Day

Maynard School in Exeter, threw themselves into all things maths last month as part of a special UK wide fundraising day in aid of the NSPCC.

Since it launched 21 years ago, more than 3,500 schools have taken part in fun activities for the NSPCC’s maths-inspired ‘Number Day’ and raised nearly £2 million in the process for the charity.

As part of the day, on Friday, 7 May, Maynard school enjoy puzzles, games and challenges. One Year 6 student, Helena said: “We worked together in our team and defeated the maths questions. Although some maths I really don’t like, I found Numbers Day really fun.”

This year the NSPCC created a new game called Buddy’s Key Challenge where pupils completed maths puzzles to create a key which unlocked a door so the charity’s mascot Buddy could visit the school.

Emily also in Year 6 said: “Normally I sigh at the mention of maths but Numbers Day was joyful. When my team got the first piece of Buddy’s Key Challenge I was immensely proud.”

Mr Smerdon, Head of Maynard Junior School: “We were delighted to take part in our first Number Day! The children thoroughly enjoyed dressing up for the day and taking part in a range of maths activities across the school.

“We are always looking for ways to try to instil more confidence within the pupils as maths is often a subject that they can worry about. As always, it was a pleasure to raise money for the NSPCC and to continue our support for the Speak Out Stay Safe programme.”

The school raised £397 which will go towards vital services in Devon and across the UK.

Colette Hudson, NSPCC Schools Service area coordinator, said: “A huge thank you to Maynard School for supporting the NSPCC through Number Day this year. We hope it provided children and teachers a fun filled educational day to look forward to.”

Schools can now also access an online version of the NSPCC’s Speak out Stay safe assembly presented by Ant and Dec. Speak out Stay safe is a safeguarding programme for children aged 5- to 11-years-old.
