Families are invited to get stuck in at Lower Halsdon Farm, near Exmouth, on Sunday 27 September.

From 10am until 3pm, children will be given the chance to connect with nature and the outdoors as work on hedge-centric tasks including cutting back and laying with loppers and saws.

As well as learning new skills, they will build confidence and explore aspects of countryside management in an informal and relaxed way. As a reward for all their hard work, the children will also be able to tick off a few ‘50 things to do before you're 11 ¾’ activities, like cooking on a campfire.

Ranger Lucy Buckingham said: “Hedgerows are an important part of the beautiful Devon countryside as they provide food and shelter for many rare and threatened wildlife species, including birds and small mammals. Laying the hedge using these traditional methods not only helps to regenerate and prolong the life of the hedge but it also creates a stock-proof boundary for farmers.

“The event is free and no booking is necessary - join in for the whole session or just for an hour. All tools, tea and coffee will be provided, but please bring a packed lunch if you are stopping for the day and we suggest wearing old clothes suitable for the weather and welly boots.”

Follow the signs and flags from the gate of Lower Halsdon Farm at the Exmouth end of the Estuary trail path. There is parking available on Mudbank Way (EX8 3EG). For more information about this event, email eastdevon@nationaltrust.org.uk.
