Fire closes part of city centre

Emergency services declared a "major incident" in Exeter after fire broke out at McDonald's restaurant in the High Street yesterday morning (Sunday).

Some roads and shops were closed and the public were warned to stay away from the area.

Below is the full report from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue:

Fire control received a call from a property in Exeter High Street reporting an oven on fire.

Three fire appliances from Danes Castle and Crediton and the aerial appliance from Danes castle attended the incident.

On arrival the incident commander stated there was smoke issuing from the first floor and the roof and they requested an additional fire appliance which came from Middlemoor.

The incident command unit from Honiton was also mobilised.

Update: 10:26 - Terraced commercial building of three floors used as fast food restaurant and outlet, smoke issuing from third floor and roof. Crews using four breathing apparatus sets, one hose reel jet, one dry powder extinguisher and a thermal imaging camera.

Update..10:35 - Incident Commander has requested a further four appliances for personnel. These are attending from Exmouth, Crediton, Topsham and Ottery St Mary.

Update..10:53 - Fire in ground floor kitchen of three storey commercial property measuring approximately 10m by 30m. The incident has been sectorised. Crews are using six breathing apparatus sets, two hose reel jets, one main jet and one safety jet. The hydraulic platform is now in use.

Update 11:32 - Crews now have 10 breathing apparatus sets in use, four hose reel jets, one main jet, hydraulic platform, 13.5m ladder, two short extension ladders and three thermal imaging cameras.

Update 12:00 - The breathing apparatus sets have now been reduced to two in use, along with one hose reel jet, one positive pressure ventilation fan and two thermal imaging cameras.

Update 13:30 - The incident is now being scaled down to 3 fire engines. The breathing apparatus is also now discontinued.

Update 16:25 - All appliances have now left the scene and the incident has finished.  The fire was involving a 3 storey terraced commercial building measuring approximately 10 metres by 30 metres used as a restuarant. 

The fire was in the ground floor kitchen and ducting.  There was 100% smoke damage on all three floors.  There were 10 breathing appartus sets, four hose reel jets, one main jet, a hydraulic platform, ladders and three thermal imaging cameras used throughout the incident.
