Firefighters tackle chip shop blaze

Firefighters wearing breathing apperatus tackled a blaze at a chip shop in Crediton.

The alarm was raised at just after 7.30pm and two appliances were mobilised from Crediton and an additional appliance from Exeter Danes Castle.

On arrival crews found smoke billowing from the Trawler's Catch in High Street and set about using two breathing apperatus, one hose reel jet, and a covering jet for safety. The fire involved a deep fat fryer and a steel flue.

Crews increased breathing apperatus to four and a dry powder extinguisher was also in use.

At 8.11pm crews requested the mobilisation of the aerial ladder from Exeter to assist with access to extinguish the fire within the steel flue. One roof ladder and a 10.5metre ladder were also in use.

At 8.40 firefighterswere making steady progress cutting away and exposing a flat roof to prevent fire spread. Safety at heights equipment, compressed air foam and a thermal imaging camera was also in use.

The police were in attendance to provide traffic control and closed the High Street for some time. The Environment Agency were also informed.

The two storey building, used a commercial food takeaway, had 100% of shop damaged by smoke, and 50% of first floor flat damaged by smoke. The deep fat fryer was 100% damaged by fire. Crews used a total of six breathing apperatus and two hose reel jets to extinguish the fire. The cause of the fire was accidental.
