Free Jurassic Coast talk
As part of its Coastal Festival 2015, the National Trust in East Devon are linking up with the team from Jurassic Coast to give a free talk about the history of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site on Tuesday 30 June at 7.30pm in Branscombe village hall.
Sam Scriven of the Jurassic Coast Team says: ‘Find out why this spectacular 95 miles of coastline is globally unique; and discover why its rocks, fossils and landforms led to its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site’.
Branscombe beach is one of the beaches on the Jurassic Coast that is looked after by the National Trust. Situated between Sidmouth and Seaton, the long pebble beach is flanked by chalk and mudstone cliffs. Community ranger Ruby Cole is looking for people with good people skills to join the new team of Welcome volunteers on the beach.
Ruby says ‘The Welcomers will help visitors explore the rockpools and understand the geology of this amazing piece of coastline. The Jurassic Coast talk is part of the training for volunteers.’
Equipped with nets and leaflets the Welcomers will help families get closer to nature by experiencing some of the National Trusts ‘50 things to do before you are 11 ¾’ such as investigating creatures in rockpools like devil crabs and brittle stars.
Volunteer Di Holtom from Honiton says: ‘It’s fun meeting and helping visitors rummage through the rockpools and create crazy characters with the stones.'
