Get Fit In The New Year With Your Local Football Club
If your New Year’s resolution is to get fit, what better way to start than by joining the Exeter City FC running club in January?
The club, which is part of the national Run England scheme, is open to runners of all levels of fitness and organisers are particularly keen on encouraging those who are new to the sport to come along. The courses run in blocks of 10 weeks and cost £2 per session - which is far cheaper than a gym membership.
The first meeting will be held at St James Park on Thursday 10 January at 6.30pm and lasts for around an hour, giving members a chance to meet each other before heading out on a gentle jog around the Exeter streets.
“Our beginners’ course was really popular and the participants did so well that they have progressed to the intermediate group, so we are looking to recruit new members,” says Jamie Vittles, the Community Trust manager.
“There is absolutely no pressure on anyone to be able to run like Mo Farah or Jo Pavey - this is simply about increasing your fitness levels and having fun while you do it. There is no set pace to run at and no one will get left behind. If you’ve never run a step and get to the end of the first session having run 100, then that’s exactly what we are hoping for.”
The only requirement for joining is a decent pair of trainers and, of course, if you have any pre-existing health conditions to check with your doctor first.
“We want to get the message out there that improving your fitness while enjoying
exercising outdoors is really important,” Jamie says. “There are so many health benefits to be gained - as well as making new friends and having fun along the way.”
