After noticing that there was a lack of events such as the Superhuman Games in the South West, Grant Hardwell and Paul Goff, the owners of GoHARD events, decided to bring a new sporting challenge to Devon. “We’re all about trying to be as original as possible, where we can use the terrain of the beautiful Devon countryside as the obstacle. We design our events to be challenging, but doable by the majority of people. If you can run, climb, carry and crawl – then this event is for you”.

The GoHARD Obstacle Run Series is a 3km and 6km run incorporating various obstacles, including a camouflage net crawl, a Bulgarian bag carry, log lunge, farmers walk, balance beam and ‘over and under’ hurdles. Failure to cross the balance beam will see competitors tasting dirt as they are then made to execute 5 solid burpees. The ‘over and under’ hurdles include a series of solid 6ft walls, intermixed with low beams requiring good upper body strength and agility. The course is suited for all abilities and the entry cost of £22 includes an event vest, with spot prizes for the event winners. Sponsors of the series include GNC Exeter and Two Seasons, who gave out some great goodie bags at the very first GoHARD event.

The first event of the series took place at Woodbury Common on Saturday 1 August and saw 80 keen runners take on the challenging obstacles. The definite strength-based element to this run will be evident again in the Haldon Forest run to be held on Saturday 5 September.

Winners of the inaugural run were Stuart Holloway and Ellie Guest. Stuart, who travelled all the way from Andover to complete the course, finished the race with an amazing time of 48 minutes and 1 second. As the first male winner of GoHARD events, Stuart commented, “I had a great time at the event as did the rest of our team. This was the first obstacle race I have taken part in and didn’t really know what to expect from the obstacles. The event was very well organised, the location was brilliant and the obstacles, whilst some were pretty tough, were really good fun. Thankfully my ironman training must have helped somewhat!”

Ellie, from Exeter, smashed the race in a time of 54 minutes and 45 seconds, said that “the race was by far the most challenging, both physically and mentally, that I’ve ever done. I really enjoyed myself and the atmosphere was great with all the competitors and volunteers being really supportive. The win for fastest female topped it all off, I was on such a high and still am! Can’t wait to do it again!”
