Help from domestic abuse agencies this Christmas

With the festive season upon us, which traditionally sees an increase in incidents of domestic abuse, support agencies would like to raise awareness of the services and help available to those who are at risk, or suffering domestic abuse across the region this Christmas.

Figures from Devon and Cornwall Police show that in December 2011, a total of 231 domestic abuse incidents were recorded in the period between Christmas Day and New Year 2011 – a 48% increase on the average number of incidents during the rest of the year.

Rachel Martin from adva (against domestic violence and abuse), Devon’s domestic abuse partnership which is led by Devon County Council said; “In homes where there is violence and abuse throughout the year, problems can often get worse during the festive season”.

“This increase is caused by a number of factors including a sharp rise in people’s alcohol consumption, as well as the high expectations and financial pressures at Christmas time which can be a contributing factor in arguments or outbursts of violence.  At this time of higher risk, it is important that people know there is help at hand”.

Commenting on the increase of domestic incidents at Christmas Councillor Debo Sellis, Devon County Council Lead for Domestic Abuse Services said: “Domestic violence can be directed emotionally, verbally and physically and sexually, at women, men, babies, toddlers, youngsters, elderly and the family pet.   It has no boundaries and can be experienced by rich and poor.

“Domestic violence can result in permanent physical and emotional injury and sometimes death. Don’t be alone, seek help.”
