Chris Sampson, who is responsible for overseeing all the conservation and building work at Exeter Cathedral has been awarded the highest honour his profession boasts - that of the title ‘Master Mason’.

Just four or five craftsman a year are awarded this honour, which recognises their skills, knowledge and overall contributions to their craft.

Chris, who is the Clerk of Works for Exeter Cathedral but was previously head stonemason at Salisbury Cathedral for 16 years said: “It’s a great honour to be nominated for this, let alone get it. I’m thrilled. I hope that this might encourage others considering a career in a craft like stonemasonry.”

He was presented with a certificate confirming the award by the Lord Mayor of the City of London Alan Yarrow, and the Master of the Worshipful Company of Masons, Robert Morrow.

Dean of Exeter Cathedral the Very Revd Jonathan Draper said: “This is a wonderful achievement for Chris, who is dedicated to his craft, and an inspiration to others. Under his guidance, we have doubled the number of stonemasons we employ who are now carrying out major conservation projects , ensuring that this beautiful building is preserved for future generations.”
