Hundreds get moving at Cranbrook Community Fun Day

The Community Fun Day at Cranbrook has been hailed a success after attracting hundreds of people keen to walk and cycle more often, helping in Cranbrook’s aim to be a healthy town.

The event, organised by Devon County Council, Action East Devon and Cranbrook Town Council, was a hit with families who enjoyed a variety of entertainment on offer throughout the day.

Around 160 children took part in cycle skills and mountainbike sessions – with some of them learning to cycle on the day.

Guided cycle rides, with free bike hire, through Cranbrook also proved popular with over 40 people taking part, and guided rides may now be run on a regular basis in the town.

Crowds were also treated to a display of extraordinary bike-handling skills by world class mountain bike trials rider Andrei Burton.

The Fun Day was an opportunity to inspire as many people as possible to walk, cycle or take the bus or train when travelling to work or school. Information and advice about active travel and public transport was provided by Devon County Council’s Travel Devon team.

Devon County Council is now planning a further engagement programme with Cranbrook residents and Saturday’s event has already generated ideas for future community activities.

A number of community groups took part in the day including the TAG Cranbrook group, who gave a spectacular display of Taekwondo. There were also stalls run by the Patient Participation Group, Cranbrook Town Council, Girl guides, National Trust Killerton, One Small Step and the Rotary Club among others.
