Illustrated talk by Taller Experimental de Grafica at Double Elephant

Next Wednesday (6 March), artists Luis Lara and Yamilys Jorge, the Directors of Taller Experimental de Grafica, Havana, will be visiting Exeter's Double Elephant Print Workshop.

They will be arriving at the workshop around late morning to meet members and later that evening, at 6pm, they will be giving an Illustrated Talk at Thornlea, Exeter University Drama Department (opposite “The Imperial” pub), New North Road, Exeter EX4 4LA. This is a fantastic opportunity to hear about the work and history of the Taller Experimental de Grafica, the premier printmaking studio in Cuba.

Established in Havana in 1962, by local artists – with the support of the then Minister of Industry, Che Guevara – the studio has played a pivotal role in the development of modern printmaking in Cuba, supporting local artists and writers, and increasingly reaching out internationally. In spite of the US-led economic blockade of Cuba and shortages of all materials, the workshop has produced many beautiful, high quality editions in lithography, collagraphy, woodcut, etching and other print processes. Cuba has a fascinating history that is reflected in the work of its artists and the country is now on the verge of economic liberalisation.

Luis and Yamilys are visiting the UK to launch their first major exhibition of fine art prints to be seen here, as part of Gloucestershire Printmaking Co-operative’s Impress ’13 International Printmaking Festival, to be held in Stroud in March.

Tickets for the talk cost £7, with all proceeds going to benefit the Havana Workshop. The artists there manage to achieve fantastic results with very limited resources, so Double Elephant is appealing for you to support them and buy your tickets from www.doubleelephant.org.uk
