Jurassic Coast gets a right royal clean-up
Countryside team and Axe Vale Canoe Club members missed the royal wedding to clear-up a 1km section of the East Devon coastline
On Saturday 19 May 2018, 15 members of the Axe Vale Canoe Club, supported by an East Devon District Council Countryside ranger took part in a coastline clean-up.
The team used canoes to remove rubbish from a 1km stretch of the coastline, East of the River Axe, up to Culverhole Point.
Cllr Tom Wright, East Devon District Council’s portfolio holder for the Environment said: “It is fantastic to see community groups working together to keep the East Devon environment an outstanding place. This is a great example for StreetScene, the Countryside team and a local group working together for the benefit of local people, visitors and wildlife. Thank you for your hard work.’’
Countryside ranger, Nathan Robinson said: “The section of the Jurassic Coastline between the River Axe and Culverhole Point is hard to access via foot so I was really pleased to support the Canoe Club with their initiative to remove rubbish using canoes. We collected loads of rubbish including fishing tackle, plastic bottles, lots of golf balls and even a small fridge.’’
East Devon District Council supported the clean-up by providing bags and litter pickers. The StreetScene department arranged an additional collection of the rubbish. The Canoe Club do regular beach cleans on the River Axe and along the coast to help tackle the litter problems facing our seas.
