Ladram Bay backs beach campaign
One of Devon’s most stunning beaches has received some tender loving care from a group of community volunteers.
Corinna Stephens organised the event at Ladram Bay, on the Jurassic Coast between Sidmouth and Budleigh Salterton in East Devon, because of her love of the beach there.
She organised the clean-up on Saturday (Mar 28) as part of the Surfers against Sewage national Big Spring Beach Clean programme, which saw volunteers out on 150 beaches across the country.
Corinna, who lives near Ladram Bay at Exmouth, said: “It’s devastating to see so much marine pollution and litter on our beaches and it causes profound effects across not only our waters but foreign seas too. I regularly sea swim, run and enjoy triathlon and all these events bring me close to the beach.
”The beach clean was great. We all got stuck in and it was lovely to be joined by staff from Ladram Bay Holiday Park as well. A big thanks to all the volunteers who turned out to support the clean-up.”
The Surfers against Sewage initiative brings together thousands of volunteers to help conserve and enhance Britain’s coastline. A recent United Nation Environment Programme (UNEP) report estimated that eight million individual litter items enter the marine environment every day, meaning that there is now more plastic than plankton in some areas of the world’s oceans.
Claire Williams, General Manager at Ladram Bay, said: “We take great care of the beach at Ladram Bay but it was fantastic to see so many volunteers lend a helping hand. We are delighted to support Corinna and the national campaign and do our bit to keep the beaches of the West Country rubbish-free.”
