North Devon Hospice has been selected by local employees at Mondelēz International’s Ernest Jackson site to receive a donation of £5,000.

Providing specialist care and support to those living with a life-limiting illness, the charity will be granted the substantial figure from The Cadbury Foundation, as part of its ‘Your Charity Your Choice’ scheme.

North Devon Hospice supports the whole family, when someone is affected by an incurable illness. The majority of support is provided in patients’ homes, while counselling and bereavement support is given to everyone involved.

The charity also provides a range of specialist care and support from its two sites in North Devon - Deer Park in Barnstaple and The Long House in Holsworthy. Deer Park offers a Bedded Unit where patients suffering from the most severe symptoms can be cared for around the clock.

The £5,000 grant will purchase a much-needed specialist reclining chair for the hospice’s Bedded Unit. It has been designed to offer maximum comfort to those with severe symptoms and will allow them the feeling of normality, offering the opportunity to spend time out of their bed every day.

Each year, Mondelēz International’s UK employees are invited to nominate charities or projects close to their hearts, with the final shortlisted charities voted for by the wider workforce.

George Ware, project manager at the Mondelēz International site in Crediton, nominated the hospice to receive the £5,000 bursary. George said: “North Devon Hospice delivers incredible and vital work for our local community and endlessly touches so many lives for the better.

“For so many people, the charity is a safe place that provides invaluable support for people throughout the region, so I nominated them to receive the donation to enable them to continue the amazing work that they do.”

Kerry Milton, senior staff nurse, at North Devon Hospice, commented: “The benefits of this reclining chair to our patients are endless. It will aid with circulation, allow them to sit on their balcony to enjoy the views and fresh air, as well as maintain a sense of independence by being able to be out of bed while remaining comfortable, plus much more.

“We are very grateful to The Cadbury Foundation for their support. It will make a real difference to the comfort of patients who are experiencing the most severe symptoms from cancer and other illnesses.”

The Cadbury Foundation was set up in 1935 in recognition of Richard and George Cadbury and their investment in the welfare of their employees and the local community. Across all Mondelēz International UK sites, £55,000 will be pledged for the ‘Your Charity Your Choice’ campaign.

Kelly Farrell, community affairs manager at Mondelēz International, said: “We’re extremely proud to be able to support the charities that are important to our employees through our ‘Your Charity Your Choice’ scheme.

“North Devon Hospice provides invaluable services across the region, and we’re delighted to know that with The Cadbury Foundation’s help, they can continue delivering vital help to their local community.”
