Long-standing member of Exeter School staff retires after 42 years

Exeter School said farewell to a much loved and respected member of staff at the end of the summer term.

Director of Alumni Relations, John Davidson, retired in August after 42 years of outstanding service to the school.

Headmaster Bob Griffin paid tribute to John by saying there were few areas of school life to which he had not contributed.

"He was an inspirational Head of Geography for 19 years, and he led the RAF Section of the CCF for seven years, as well as running Adventure Training eight times.

"A caring pastoral teacher, he founded and led Townsend House for 16 years; he was the founder and President of the SW Geographical Association.

"He gave a great deal of support to Ten Tors and our outdoor life. His lifesaving expertise has enabled hundreds of pupils and staff to gain swimming pool qualifications. He has been a stalwart supporter of school drama, and his wife Vicki has run the wardrobe with flair and imagination."

John joined the Senior Management Team in 1998: as Head of Administration, he demonstrated a mastery of detail when he held responsibility for staff training, Oxbridge admissions, editing Exeter School Life, the annual calendar as well as juggling the assemblies, trips and visit programme.

An experienced ISI inspector, he was the school's lead for numerous successful inspections. John's final phase at the school was marked by the establishment and success of the Alumni Office.

Pupils, staff, friends and colleagues wish John and Vicki a long and happy retirement.

John is succeeded by an experienced alumni and fundraising professional, Rachael Magee, who will join the school in October.
