Major blaze in Exmouth
Several roads were closed after a major blaze broke out in Exmouth this morning (Tuesday 21 June).
The fire is believed to have started at the Consol Sun tanning studio in The Parade and spread to Ladbrookes next door.
The Parade between The Strand and Exeter Road is currently closed in Exmouth.
The Fire Service was called to a report of smoke coming from a shop on the Parade in Exmouth at around 7.10am today.
Two fire engines from Exmouth along with one from Middlemoor were sent to this incident.
On arrival they requested a further fire engine attend, this was sent from Topsham.
Police were also requested to attend to close the road.
The crews confirmed that this was a tanning studio and was well alight. They got to work with six breathing apparatus wearers with tw hose reel jets.
Shortly after confirming the above they requested another two fire engines to attend. These were sent from Danes Castle.
Crews are now at work using four breathing apparatus wearers with three main jets. Another two fire engines were requested to make it up to a total of eight fire engines, they were mobilised from Sidmouth and Ottery St Mary.
An aerial ladder platform was then requested to attend, this was sent from Danes Castle.
Update at 8.30am. Breathing apparatus wearers were increased to 11. Positive pressure fans were used to clear smoke. The Red Cross Fire and Emergency Support Service were also requested to assist with people whose homes had be affected by the fire.
Update at 9.30am. An Ambulance was requested for two female suffering from smoke inhalation.
Update at 10.30am. Crews are continuing to damp down hotspots making steady progress.
Update at noon. Crew are at work with small tools from the aerial ladder platform cutting away the roof to expose hot spots. Positive pressure fans and one hose reel jet are also in use. A building inspector was requested to attend due to some masonry being in a precarious position.
Update at 4.30pm. The incident has been scaled down to one appliance from Exmouth. There is significant damage to the building, and crews are assisting on scene.
