Further bands of heavy rain accompanied by strong winds are expected to move northeastwards across the southwest of England and south Wales into early tomorrow morning.

The wet weather is sue to contiune well into Monday.

Given that the ground is already saturated, the public should be prepared for the risk of localised flooding from both rivers and surface water.

The police and Highways Agency are urging drivers only to travel if they have to and to take precauations when venturing out.

Drivers are advised to check traffic information before travelling, look out for motorway messages and listen for radio traffic and travel updates.

It can take twice as long to stop when the road surface is wet, so drivers are advised to slow down and maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front. Driving too quickly through water can cause aquaplaning and loss of control of your vehicle which can lead to accidents.

The Highways Agency, which operates and maintains motorways and the strategic road network in England, is working closely with the Met Office, other government agencies and emergency services to continually monitor weather conditions and maintain safe roads and reliable journeys.

The Agency offers a number of services to help people make decisions about their journeys. Up-to-date traffic information on road conditions on England's motorways and trunk roads is available on its website at www.highways.gov.uk/traffic.
